SUPREME-SECURE invites manufacturers of automated and semi-automated upper arm cuff blood pressure devices to respond to a new Request for Proposals supporting validation, registration and access in sub-Saharan Africa.
SUPREME-SECURE — a four-year project funded by Unitaid and led by the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) with the Aurum Institute, Burnet Institute, Concept Foundation and WACI Health — has issued an open Request for Proposals (RFP-PE005-SECURE) for blood pressure (BP) measuring devices suitable for home-based monitoring in pregnancy.
Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, chiefly pre-eclampsia, are among the leading direct causes of maternal death, and more than 95% of related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. Blood pressure measurement is the single most important screening test in antenatal care — yet many women are not monitored between visits, and a rising blood pressure can go undetected until complications are advanced.
SUPREME-SECURE is seeking to validate and support affordable, quality-assured cuffed BP devices for a community health worker (CHW)-supported model, in which women measure their own blood pressure at home between antenatal visits with support from a CHW who carries a shared device. Through the RFP, selected manufacturers may receive independent clinical validation (including in pregnant and pre-eclamptic populations), an operational study in Ghana and Kenya, technical assistance for regulatory and market entry readiness, and — where justified — financial support toward regulatory filing costs.
Who should apply
The RFP is open to manufacturers of automated or semi-automated upper arm cuff BP measuring devices that are validated to ISO 81060-2:2018 in a general population and manufactured under ISO 13485:2016 (or with a credible, time-bound plan to meet these). Prior validation in a pregnant population is not required to apply — generating that evidence is a core purpose of the program. Cuffless devices, wrist- and finger-cuff devices, and manual auscultatory devices are out of scope for this round.
