The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) seeks interested and capable vendors to submit quotations for the supply and installation of a medical oxygen piping distribution for the Louangphabang Provincial Hospital, Laos PDR.

CHAI is supporting the improvement of oxygen availability and supply systems for Mafeteng district and the neighboring region.

In 2021, CHAI and partners worked together with the Ministry of Health, Indonesia, to roll out pneumococcal conjugate vaccines to the four provinces of NTB, Babel, East Java, and West Java.

In a corner of the emergency pediatric unit a four-year-old boy with pneumonia was struggling to breathe despite using an oxygen concentrator. The hospital technician was called to check on the machine and discovered it was broken—the concentrator had been pumping ambient air.  

In Ethiopia, pneumonia accounts for 18 percent of all child deaths. Hypoxemia, or low blood oxygen, is a common and deadly complication of pneumonia. Medical oxygen is the only treatment. 

CHAI’s 2020 Annual Report is out now. The theme for the year is ‘working with urgency’.

CHAI and AFROX Zambia are helping the government of Zambia improve the availability of medical oxygen in the country, while also building a framework for local contractual agreements that could form the basis of longer-term purchasing deals by governments and global agencies that fund access to medical oxygen to avoid supply shortages.

Agreement brokered by Unitaid and CHAI under the COVID-19 Oxygen Emergency Taskforce sees two of the world’s largest medical oxygen suppliers each collaborate with these ACT-Accelerator partners on increased access to oxygen.
