AIDS was killing millions of people. CHAI was founded to make treatment equitable. 

At that time there were close to two million AIDS-related deaths globally every year, yet less than 10 percent of people living with HIV were on lifesaving treatment in low- and middle-income countries. CHAI worked with ministries of health and other partners to turn the tide on the disease.
