5 Questions with Julia Dunn

Our monthly check-in with staff from around the world. Learn more about the people who work at CHAI.

Please tell us a bit about your background and what brought you to CHAI.

After completing my PhD at Imperial College London in infectious disease epidemiology, I started with CHAI in 2019 as an epidemiologist and technical advisor on the malaria analytics, surveillance and technology (MAST) team in the Greater Mekong Subregion. I was based in Laos for three years and covered Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam as well. At the end of 2022, I transitioned to a senior technical advisor role, still supporting the Greater Mekong Subregion, as well as our teams across Africa. I am now based in Manchester, UK.

1. What’s the best thing about your job?

In my role I get to work with many global, regional, and country staff. The best part of my job is getting to talk to this huge variety of people, learn from them, support them, help them, visit country offices, and occasionally grab a drink with them.

2. When do you feel the most inspired by your work?

I feel the most inspired by my work when we have our regional meetings. It’s an opportunity for everyone to come together in-person, discuss what we’ve all been up to over the past year, including what we’re proud of, what’s worked, what hasn’t worked and what we hope to achieve over the next year.

3. What is your favorite thing about your career?

Travelling, applying my experience and skills to real world problems, working with people from all disciplines of public health.

4. What’s a goal you have for yourself that you want to accomplish in the next year?

Now that I’ve moved back to the UK, my goal is to go on more walks and get out into the countryside more. The Laos countryside was amazing and beautiful but hikes in 30+ degree weather were challenging.

 5. If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It’s the most stereotypical answer I could possibly come up with, but it would be a Sunday roast dinner.
